Downloaded a trial version of SilverEfex Pro from NikSoftware. This Lightroom plugin (there is also a version for Apple Aperture and Adobe Photoshop). It allows you to do B&W conversion and simulate various film stock from the days gone by. It also has control points like Nikon’s Capture NX. After all it’s been done by the same people.
Here is a photo I took the other day. Used remote flash, camera left, triggered by CLS. After importing it to Lightroom, I converted it to B&W using SilverEfex Pro. Here is the result. I have a feeling that this software will become my friend for a long time.

I’ve finally jumped the ship. Last Friday I’ve finally ordered a brand spanking new iMac. Top of the line 24″ aluminium model with 3.06GHz Intel core duo processor, 4Gb RAM, 1Tb HDD, 512Mb nVidia graphic card. On top of that I got myself 1Tb Time Capsule. Got it through Apple Shop on Black Friday. Now for the disappointing bit – it will arrive some time mid-December. I know it is not that far off in the future, but you know how it is when you wait for a new toy. The time just drags on and on.

iMac

On the other hand this gives me two weeks to plan the migration from Windows, get Mac version of the software I use on almost daily basis (Photoshop, Lightroom), some new software for calibrating the display and clean my desk.

What would be interesting is crossgrading from Windows Adobe CS2 to Mac OS X CS4. I am going to call Adobe here in Switzerland and see how much the crossgrade will cost me. And then, once my iMac is delivered, the journey will begin. I’ve already identified few places in my photographic workflow where I’ll be forced to make some changes. I use Downloader Pro to transfer my images from camera to HDD. I know there are some other programs that do just that but I have failed to identify a program that creates XMP files and Geo-codes the images at the same time. Downloader Pro does it in one go. Lightroom should not be a problem as it should work just the same as under Windows. Lightroom export plugins for Flickr and Zenfolio should work as well.

Hardware calibration might be problematic as apparently the brightness of iMac screen cannot be turned down enough. And I do not want to use shades as it introduces some color cast. There is some software that works with i1 Display2 puck and addresses this issue. I’ll have to look into this.

Anyway, it looks like interesting and busy X-mas for me.
