Shot info: One softbox slightly in front and above the model at f/16, silver reflector on the floor in front of the model, slightly angled. Well, the key light was turned of for this shot. It almost looks like iPod ad, doesn’t it?

IKEA chair

I have recently become a proud owner of Elinchrom BXRi studio lights. The things you can do with light are simply amazing. With carefully selected modifiers you can achieve effects simply not available to hot-shoe flash shooters. Well, perhaps they are achievable but with a lot more effort. And somehow the quality of light is oh so different.

What a camera! What a model! It seems like I am getting better and better results with my D700. The exposure is spot-on. The lighting setup with CLS is a piece of cake. And the model is co-operating.

Human – Machine Interface

This is the keyboard I’m using at the moment. This photo has been taken hand held at 1600 ISO using available light. Slight PP in LR to remove noise, some sharpening and we are ready to upload to Flickr. In reality I’m just testing how much time I need between an actual shot and the moment the photo is uploaded to Flickr.

New possibilities and techniques

Isn’t it funny that whenever you come across a stunning photo you inevitably find out that you need to get more equipment to be able to to do the same thing. In the case of photo below, a camera that allows you to take long exposures (check), tripod (check), pretty strong ND filters (bummer, need to get those) are required.

I’ve been tossing the idea of getting some good filters around my head for a while. I did some preliminary research into the subject. Effectively it comes down to an entry level Cokin filters or upmarket Singh-rays, which may I add are prohibitively expensive. I’ll give myself more time before I’ll make a move. This photo however motivates me to make this move sooner than later.

Comet – our fearless whippet

Here is my attempt at photographing running dogs, our whippet in this case. It is not as easy as it seems. These dogs have been known to reach 60 km/h. I’m quite sure this was not the case this time, nevertheless the AF system of my trusty D50 got quite the workout. So did Comet by the way. I had to up the ISO to 400 as the light was almost gone and I wanted to get some decent shutter speed to freeze the action. Next time I’ll try it when the Sun is more generous with its rays.
