I found that I quite like Nikkor AF-S VR Micro 105mm f/2.8 G for this kind of shooting. It fills the frame nicely on FX and allows me to get close whenever I need to.

In this shot I used one soft box as a background and another one as key light. Lastolite Trigrip reflector provided extra light under the chin. All triggered with Skyport.

Just set-up the starting position, focus, ending position and step size. Then press the button and several photos later you have enough source material to feed to Helicon Focus. The software, as ever obliging, spits out nice, sharp photos using all the frames you captured. Nice.

I just had to try it out. Notice the quality of light, the spill control, the reflection in the eyes. It all adds up to one hot photo. I will definitely use this modifier more often.
