Downloaded a trial version of SilverEfex Pro from NikSoftware. This Lightroom plugin (there is also a version for Apple Aperture and Adobe Photoshop). It allows you to do B&W conversion and simulate various film stock from the days gone by. It also has control points like Nikon’s Capture NX. After all it’s been done by the same people.
Here is a photo I took the other day. Used remote flash, camera left, triggered by CLS. After importing it to Lightroom, I converted it to B&W using SilverEfex Pro. Here is the result. I have a feeling that this software will become my friend for a long time.

This was quite a difficult session. From the photographic point of view that is. It was getting late (8pm), it was getting dark and yet I had been asked to take some photos no matter what. I bumped ISO to 800, mounted my trusty Nikor AF 50mm f1.4D on my camera and off we went to capture some action. I measured the scene by setting my camera to manual. You can see the exposure details in the original comments displayed under the photo. For photographing jumping horses you have to ensure your shutter opens for the shortest time possible. Anything below 1/1000 should be sufficient.
