I am always on a lookout for a good way to present photographs on the Internet. This means that I experiment a lot. Some time ago (like last year) I embarked on the road to learn Flex™ in order to create a photo gallery that I could integrate into Lightroom Web Module. The gallery itself was working OK but LR integration was another story altogether. At the time I gave up on it. Now I feel it is time to revisit this little project of mine. Here is what that gallery looked like at the time.

My Flex™2 Gallery

I have uploaded the old copy so that you can see it in action. I also started a new blog called yOOrek’s Flex™ Adventure, where I will be documenting my progress with rebuilding this gallery. Please check it out if Flash/Flex based photo galleries are of any interest to you. I also plan to turn these pages into Lightroom2 web gallery template. Please let me know if any of these two developments would be useful for you. If yes, I would try to allocate more time for it to speed the development process up.

As you probably have noticed, I have changed the theme on this blog. But I think I’d better start from the beginning.

I have moved my blog from WordPress.com to my own host. Why? I get more freedom to do what I want. I am not limited by few blog themes offered by WordPress.com. I do not have to pay to be able to edit theme files. I can have Google Analytics and Google AdSense on my blog. The list just goes on. The move itself was not difficult at all. Install WordPress on the new web server, export the contents of the blog from WordPress.com and import into new one. All done in 30 minutes. I’m a happy camper now.

The question was – what to do with this newly gained freedom? Themes were the obvious choice. After a prolonged search I settled on a ‘desk mess’ theme for a while. You probably have seen it. It was the one with an iPhone and a cup of tea in the header. But somehow I was not entirely happy with it.

Everything changed when I came across www.smashingmagazine.com website. It is a virtual goldmine for all things web related. Themes, icons, design tips. It has it all. It is there that I’ve discovered few nice themes. In the end it came down to two of them. One, with beautiful graphics. The other, had no graphics at all. One supported the widgets, the other did not. One was a real eye candy, so was the other. Decisions, decisions.

In the end I settled on the minimalistic ASCII theme. Somehow it appeals to me on some sort of subconscious level. It reminds me of the early days of the Internet. Days, when one created complex email sigs with ASCII pictures, using vi editor (still my favorite BTW). So, there you have it. I am an old, vi loving, Unix junkie. And proud of it.

BTW, I am now enjoying unlimited data transfer, unlimited storage, unlimited sub-domains and many more ‘unlimited’ things . And all for less than a price of a good cup of java per month. I guess this financial crisis/meltdown has its good points.

I believe a short explanation is called for. I was not very active lately, neither here nor on Flickr. There are several reasons for this, one is that I have been really snowed under at work (yes, some of us have to earn a living by going to the temple of the Mammon), second reason is that I was waiting for the release of Lightroom 2.0 in order to use the new captioning feature of Jeffrey’s Lightroom Export Plugin.

I always liked the feature in Lightroom where you could build the caption by assembling various tokens from photo’s EXIF or IPCT data when creating a web gallery. This was not available in the export plug-in. When I saw that Jeffrey added similar functionality to his plug-in, I rejoiced. Alas my joy was short lived. The new captioning feature was only implemented in Zenfolio version of the plug-in. The other versions, namely Flickr’s, would get it when Lightroom 2.0 was released. Now that LR2 is available Jeffrey kept his promise and made new plug-ins available for download.

I’ll be downloading LR2 tonight and, time permitting, I’ll start uploading some of my recent photos this coming weekend.
